Porsche: 75 Years
Logo Design > Craft
The year is 1951.
The 1st of November.
And under Southern Skies, two otherwordly vehicles slumber.
Two Porsche 356s.
They've spent the day doing laps around Albert Park Lake.
They are the first of their kind in Australia.
No one could have known it then, but this was the beginning of a 75-year love affair between Porsche and Australia.
75 Years Logo
75 years later, Porsche was celebrating that journey. I was asked to help give it a logo.
I carefully crafted it based on simple geometry, taking cues from classic racing numerals and the unmistakable visual language of Porsche.
Star-filled Roofliner
To mark the occasion, Porsche was also creating something truly special: a bespoke, hand-crafted 911 Turbo S, unveiled in the heart of Australia. And woven into its interior was to be a 75-year story.
I was approached to create the roofliner, which would be a custom-designed illustration of the night sky on the ceiling of the car.
Winding back the clock, I researched the night sky above Albert Park to discover exactly how it would have looked when Porsche made its Australian debut. On this New Moon's night in 1951, the planet Jupiter glided across the sky between the constellations of Pisces and Cetus. The Southern Cross hung low along the southern horizon, while Venus would soon rise brilliantly just before dawn.
I crafted the stars and their patterns, drawing on historic star charts and combining it with the rich history of Porsche's own graphic linework. Working closely with the Sonderwunsch team in Germany, we brought the constellation to life in Neodyme Gold stitching across the roofliner.
A little piece of history,
75 years in the making.
Here’s to the next 75.
